With breaking news in Haiti to cover, CNN moved up a notch in the ratings in January, taking second place in prime time away from MSNBC, The New York Times reports.

MSNBC had held that slot for six months.

CNN had an average 946,000 viewers in prime time for the month, to MSNBC’s 838,000.

Both, however, remained a distant second to Fox News, which had its best prime-time ratings since the 2008 presidential election, the Associated Press reports. The network drew an average 2.94 million viewers in prime time in January, coming close to the 3.1 million it had on average in November 2008.
