The Oprah Winfrey Network–OWN–will probably be also seen in international markets either in whole or in programming segments.
That’s the word from Mark Hollinger. Hollinger works for Winfrey’s partner in OWN, Discovery Communications. An 18-year veteran of Discovery, he recently moved from being the company’s Chief Operating Officer to President and CEO of Discovery International Networks.
With Discovery’s announcement of its year-end financials yesterday, it’s appropriate that today we end our exhaustive 11-part special report about the company with an extensive interview with Hollinger.
Our special report has accompanied our honoring Discovery as the TVWEEK Cable TV Programmer of the Decade.
In yesterday’s financials, Discovery revealed that in this toughest of recessions the company is up 5% in ad revenues for the year, and up 2% in the last quarter.
Furthermore, according to Discovery, "Adjusted Operating Income Before Depreciation and Amortization (“OIBDA”) grew to $390 million, an increase of $28 million or 8% versus the fourth quarter a year ago, mainly driven by a 42% increase at International Networks."
That’s quite an impressive number for International, and makes our interview with Hollinger, who runs International, all the more timely. To read what Hollinger has to say about the international prospects for OWN and all of Discovery’s International operations, click here.
