ABC, Fox, Lane Bryant in Large Size Dispute

Apr 23, 2010  •  Post A Comment

ABC refused to air a lingerie ad featuring a plus-sized model, causing the ad’s creator, Lane Bryant, to accuse the network of discrimination against larger women, the New York Post reports.

ABC and Fox say that’s baloney, according to FoxNews.com.

Lane Bryant, which sells plus-sized clothing, had sought to debut its new line of lingerie during ABC’s "Dancing With the Stars" and Fox’s "American Idol."

But, according to the Post, ABC took exception with the ad’s content. "The cleavage of the plus-size models, they said, was excessive, and we don’t think that’s the case," the article quotes an unnamed Lane Bryant "insider" as saying. "It certainly appears to be discrimination against full-sized women."

However, the FoxNews article said: "ABC issued a statement saying they did not treat Lane Bryant any differently than another advertiser. ‘Their statements are not true,’ the statement said. ‘The ad was accepted. Lane Bryant was treated absolutely no differently than any advertiser for the same product. We were willing to accommodate them, but they chose to seek publicity instead.’

According to the Post story, Fox had also turned down the Lane Bryant ad, only to reverse its decision after the clothing company pointed out lingerie retailer Victoria’s Secret had a spot featuring a thin model airing during an "American Idol" episode.

However, the Fox News story quotes a Fox spokesperson as saying, "We didn’t treat them any differently than Victoria’s Secret."
