Food Network Spinoff Aims for Low-Key and Gritty in Debut

Apr 21, 2010  •  Post A Comment

The Food Network is working on a more low-key, grittier version of its food-centric programming with the debut of The Cooking Channel on May 31, the New York Times reports.

The new channel, which is replacing the Fine Living Network, may even produce documentary-type programs looking at the grim side of food fetishes: bulimia and obesity. The new approach, the Times’ article says, comes as the Food Network has seen itself bested at the table, with other networks such as TLC and Bravo appealing to foodies with edgier reality programs such as "Cake Boss" and "Top Chef."

The Cooking Channel will feature shows such a "Food Jammers," which follows three young Canadians as they build odd contraptions such as taco vending machines. But, the article points out, the Cooking Channel isn’t willing to give up all celebrity polish: the network will also include new shows with big food names including Rachael Ray and Bobby Flay.
