Oprah Winfrey has announced plans for her own show on the Oprah Winfrey Network–OWN–the forthcoming cable channel she will co-own with Discovery Communicatons.

Oprah Winfrey tells the Wall Street Journal that she’s planning on hosting an evening show on her cable network. [The WSJ is behind a firewall and may charge you to read its story. A free version, by our friend Phil Rosenthal at the Chicago Tribune, can be found here.]

The show will travel around the world, stopping in locations such as China and Egypt, and air as frequently as two or three times a week on OWN, according to the WSJ article.

"I’m going to take viewers with me, going to take celebrities I want to interview with me" around the world, Winfrey said in the article.

Having Winfrey host a show on OWN, which plans to give advertisers a detailed presentation of its lineup in upfront presentations starting today, may be crucial to the success of the venture, the article says.

Winfrey also says she may appear on other OWN programming, including a possible book-club show. "My name’s going to show up on that grid a lot," she is quoted as saying in the article.

Having Winfrey on air could help the network secure advertising deals. OWN has been working on an extensive advertising pact with Procter & Gamble, which one person familiar with the deal says is worth more than $20 million, the article noted.

  2. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
