The Cooking Channel, Premiering May 31, Announces Summer Slate

Apr 26, 2010  •  Post A Comment

On May 31, the Fine Living Channel relaunch as The Cooking Channel, broadcasting to nearly 50 million homes, reports Multichannel News.

At the Scripps upfront on April 20, plans were announced for The Cooking Channel including a show about cocktails called "Drink Up" with Darryl Robinson, the Hudson Hotel master mixologist; "Foodcrafters" hosted by Food Network’s Aida Mollenkamp about handmade, craft cooking from around America; Mo Rocca’s "Foodography" about culinary trends past and present; and "Food Jammers," set in the Jammer’s warehouse studio and presenting culinary contraptions.

There will also be classic episodes from Julia Child and "The Galloping Gourmet," plus Food Network library features like "Everyday Italian" with Giada De Laurentiis.

In the fall, two major Food Network stars — Rachael Ray and Bobby Flay — will debut new shows. "Rachael’s Week In A Day" will have Ray presenting a week’s worth of meals, while "Brunch @ Bobby’s" will focus on Flay’s fascination with the midday meal.

  1. Do you really have to have Giada De Laurentiis. She is one person I do not enjoy watching. Really looking forward to everything else.

  2. With all due respect, you don’t have to watch her show if you don’t like it. You can turn the channel, turn off the TV, go for a walk, etc. I don’t think this channel was designed specifically for you alone, and some of us like Giada’s food.

  3. I agree, Giada is too annoying,……… and just like you, we all have an opinion and are free to share it.

  4. i totally agree, she is SOOOO boring….

  5. I hope this network stays focused on the food and not the people. Wasn’t that the original intention of TVFN? The past five years, Food Network has become saturated with loud mouth cooks and semi-chefs. I like 75% of the people on FN but each year Food Network gets worse. I hope Cooking Channel will go back to basics and be much classier.

  6. Do Rachel Ray and Bobby Flay have incriminating pics of major execs or something? I like Bobby, he’s fine, but buddy make some room for some new blood. I HATE Ray Ray — no 30-something woman should say “yumo”, I find her whole approach overly scripted, her food blah, and half the time she looks miserable.
Additionally, I watched the first season of “TNFNS” and I fully admit I am not a television producer, but I have to tell you, for my money — I couldn’t possibly care less about the chefs “personal stories”, I don’t care what you eat on Thanksgiving, I don’t care how your husband likes his burger cooked, I DON’T CARE. Teach me something, that is why I am watching. Introduce me to a new ingredient, a new technique, a new ANYTHING — at this point FN personalities all talk (incessantly) and “teach” around the same thing.
Make me a better cook, that is all I want from you. And for the love of fennel somebody throw a fresh idea at these people. How about seasonal cooking? Not TALKING about seasonal cooking, mind you, but actually cooking for the current season. Or maybe a show called “I know how to sweat an onion” — a show for those of us who know our way around a kitchen but are just looking for some inspiration. FYI, Giada NOT inspiring.

  7. you all think Giada is boring…i think Ida takes the cake on that one and as for her bein annoying have you guys seen rachel ray…..

  8. Well put! Let’s talk fiber, calories, carbs, protein! I do not want to look like most of the cooks on FN! Nice people perhaps but ‘living too large’ for me with their cooking.

  9. I hope they exclude all of the Cake Shows. They are cool, but I am not a fan.

  10. You don’t know Italian cooking if you don’t like Giada. Get rid of Rachel ..you can only do so many 30min meals.
    Giada is the best.

  11. Emma – The reason why you can’t find cooking shows aimed at people that care as much as you do about carbs and calories, is because alfalfa/bean sprouts don’t require cooking knowledge in order to prepare.
Foodies; people that love food, people that are likely a lot less interested in calorie counting than experiencing wonderful flavors, textures and aromas, are the target demographic for almost any show on a cooking network.
Maybe someday a fitness network will introduce some cooking programs to their line-up.
P.S. I’d much rather look like I’d been “living too large” my whole life than go through it with calorie-anxiety and depriving myself the pleasures of experiencing amazing food. That’s hardly what I’d call living.

  12. Food Network has been out of touch for awhile. I hope the Cooking Channel will focus on urban gardens, seasonal produce, artesian producers, and truly make it about the food, how to grow our good, where our food comes from, interviews with local farmers. I loved Jamie’s Food Revolution series. You could really feel his passion. And I hope their advertising is NOT all supported by processed food manufacturers using pesticides. Someone really needs to create awareness about how much of our food supply in the US is produced by food processors and all the chemicals used and how that destroys our soil by their sloppy practices.
I cook with real, authentic ingredients and not “lite” this and that and that. Can we have one channel that we don’t use altered food ingredients to cut fat and calories? Low-fat processed cheese product is not a food. There are a gazillion places you can find for calorie cutting, processed foods. Can we have one channel that truly is devoted to REAL foods, fresh from the local farm and not altered food products with 2 calories and taste horrible?
I really enjoy ALL of Bobby’s shows. Tyler’s “ultimate” series was most enjoyable and Alton’s previous road trip series were totally captivating. I hope this new channel really celebrates food-from seed to serving it.

  13. get rid of the fat chick ann secrets of a resturant chef who look like guys feitthity wife

  14. I’m looking forward to this channel. Hopefully it’s about FOOD, and not food entertainment. I’m really tired of the same chefs hosting so many shows on the Food Network, not to mention that 80% of the Food Network chefs are annoying loudmouths who rarely actually cook anything. I’d like to see more of people like Nigella, who actually make food with ingredients that we might actually have in our kitchens.

  15. Amen, Georgia Peach. I do hope the Cooking Channel focuses on the food, not the stars and all the competitions. A basic approach to food, cooking seasonally and locally, with lots of healthy choices and technigues – that is what I would like to see.

  16. I DON’T EVEN CONSIDER PAULA DEAN A COOK. YOU CAN FIND HER RECIEPES IN ANY CHURCH COOK BOOKS
SHE IS LOUD AND ANNOYING.PAULA AND RACHEL
    NEED ANOTHER JOB.

  17. Wow, I hadn’t realized so many people feel the same about Giada, Paula Dean and Rachel Ray,can’t someone just make them go away. Everyday Italian is a waste of prime airtime. I want to know what they cook in Italy, not what she has time to cook her family, besides her constant mis-pronunciation of italian food she is just very annoying and who wants to bet she can’t speak italian so lets quit pretending we’re italian fro m the mother country. My sister got Giada’s cookbook for christmas, it had tons of pictures of her, WHAT ABOUT THE FOOD?, I don’t care what the cook looks like, I would rather see what the food is suppose to look like!, Rachel Ray, that silly annoying laugh of hers makes me change the channel every time I hear it. Paula Dean…well, its no small wonder why she’s so huge, do you really have to put the most unhealthy ingredients in everything and licking her fingers without washing her hands, YUCK!, other people will be eating that YA’LL. Lets spend time on the food, the recipes, the ingredients, give us something new, something exciting, something that will make me go right to the kitchen and follow the recipe I just saw, the whole Food Network experience now is just boring and finally, I just don’t give a d*mn how big of a cake or how dramatic the design is, whose idea was it to use so much airtime on such a waste! Lets get back to Julia type shows where you really can learn something about food, about cooking! Lets hope the Cooking Channel premiering tomorrow will give us what we want instead of some outlandish programs that everyone could care less about.

  18. Wow, the Cooking channel was pretty good today, all the shows except the history of Soda or whatever that was but, the first show I watched was french food at home, it made me want to go right out nad buy the stuff to make what she made and I didn’t see any big teeth or silly giggles all day…

  19. What channel is the cooking channel?

  24. I came across this topic on a different site and didn’t really understand it, but this post explains it better. Appreciate it!

  25. O-MY-GOD, I can not believe you said that! Giada is a vivacious and beautiful Italian woman with grace in her presentation of Italian cooking. Not sure what you don’t like, but I do know, I and probably millions of other viewers don’t want to lose sight of her. You posted this comment in April 2010 and now it’s October 2010. I hope you recovered from your illness.

  73. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  74. I just live how you run this blog, I wish that you posted more.

  75. Interesting layout on your blog. I really enjoyed reading it and also I will be back to read more in the future.

  82. This is good info! Where else can if ind out more?? Who runs this joint too? Keep up the good work 🙂

  85. You might want to reconsider all of your thing, just sayin. .

  86. How did they phrase it? If they asked if you wanted to hang out for the day it would point to this being a ‘friends’ thing, but then again it may be down to fear or shyness. They may want to ask you out, but just hanging out together carries less pressure – a chance to get you on your own, but without expectations. In this case, you need to look for more signs on the day.

  87. Aw, this was quite a good post. In idea I have to put in writing in this way additionally spending time and actual effort to manufacture a excellent article but exactly what can I say! I procrastinate alot and also no means manage to get something done.
