TV writer-director-auteur Joss Whedon ("Buffy, the Vampire Slayer") has emerged as the favorite to helm the big-screen adaptation of Marvel Studio’s "The Avengers," reports Deadline.com.

The project would involve teaming a bunch of Marvel Comic superheroes, including Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. and Captain America’s Chris Evans.

Whedon’s most recent TV series, Fox’s "Dollhouse," was canceled earlier this year. If Whedon does get the assignment, Marvel would like the film to be in theaters in May 2012.
