Crystal Steps Down From ‘NewsHour’ After 27 Years

Les Crystal, president of MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, will retire effective Aug. 31, reports B&C.

Crystal, who has been with the "NewsHour" program and its predecessors since 1983, will stay on as a senior advisor to the company until the end of 2010. He joined the show after two decades with NBC News.

While overseeing the the PBS production, Crystal expanded the original 30-minute "MacNeil/Lehrer Report" to an hour.

In a statement, Crystal said, "I am very proud of my contributions to the launch of the ‘NewsHour’ as the country’s first hour-long daily television news broadcast and its continued success as a mainstay of serious journalism."
