Dish, Weather Channel Mend Fences, and Dish Plans to Drop Plans for New Weather Network

After Dish threatened to drop the Weather Channel and create its own competing network to bring local forecasts to its subscribers, the two sides have agreed to a new deal that gives each a little bit of what it was looking for, the Los Angeles Times’ Company Town blog reports.

At the heart of the matter was a dispute over money, although Dish said it was dropping the Weather Channel because it had veered away from weather news and was showing entertainment programming.

In the new deal, the Weather Channel has agreed to provide a second network to Dish subscribers that will only deliver local weather.

And the Weather Channel received a per-subscriber increase from Dish, which according to some reports was 1 penny per subscriber, bringing its payments to 11 cents per customer. Dish said it will also drop plans to create its own weather-news network.
