Fox, CBS Rejoin National Association of Broadcasters, Years After Leaving

May 11, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Fox and CBS have rejoined the National Association of Broadcasters, an achievement for Gordon Smith, the new president of the television industry’s key lobbying group, Joe Flint writes in the Los Angeles Times’ Company Town blog.

The decision means that CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox have all returned to the trade group years after splitting from the NAB. The reason for the departures was a split between the broadcasters’ and the trade groups’ interests, with, for example, the networks pushing for laxer TV station ownership rules, while smaller broadcasters sought to preserve the current limits.

So what’s prompting the top networks to return? Several issues facing the television industry mean it will help the companies to work together, the article says. One such looming battle will pit broadcasters against the Federal Communications Commission as it asks broadcasters to return some spectrum they have been allocated for digital TV, something the TV industry is reluctant to agree to.
