Rene Balcer, an experienced producer of NBC’s "Law & Order," has been signed as the showrunner of "Law & Order: LA," the latest Dick Wolf spin-off, reports Deadline.com.

Balcer began his "L&O" tenure as a writer on the mother ship, moving up to executive producer and then in 2001 taking on "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."
