Two New York TV stations, WNBC and WPIX, have been approached to outsource the sports part of their local newscasts, the New York Post reports.

SNY, the Mets’ cable channel, is in negotiations with the two New York City television stations to provide them with sports reports, the article says.

The deal would have the two stations — WNBC-TV and WPIX-TV — eventually scrapping their own sportscasters and replacing them with SNY reporters.

WNBC is owned by NBC Universal, which has agreed to merge with Comcast, which is a part-owner of SNY with Mets owner Fred Wilpon and Time Warner Cable.

WPIX, meanwhile, is owned by Tribune Co. and already has a relationship with SNY.

The talks come as both stations have cut costs by letting go high-profile sportscasters, such as Sal Marchiano for WPIX and Len Berman at WNBC.

  1. Next will be weather. Local TV is moving closer and closer to the radio model. Using the same provider in the same city may be stretching, but it definitely can work regionally.
