Why Disney is Closing Most of Its ESPN Zone Resaurants

Bad food in the red zone?  Nah, that’s not it.

But Walt Disney Co. will indeed shutter most of its ESPN Zone stores, a chain that offers sports-themed restaurants in seven cities, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Company Town blog .

The restaurants opened in 1998 to bring the ESPN brand to sports bars, providing a family-friendly place where viewers could watch sporting events or play virtual golf and boxing in separate gaming rooms, the article says.

The only restaurants that will remain open are those linked to a Disney property, such as Anaheim, Calif.’s Downtown Disney shopping district.

"From a pure business perspective, the economics have been challenging," said an ESPN spokesman. He declined further comment. The restaurants may be victims of the recession, as a recent poll found that 30% of consumers had plans to cut their restaurant spending, the article said.

  6. But I agree with you; social shopping solution providers will need to keep innovating, keep adding value, and justify their price premium if they are to be successful.
