Wonya Lucas Gets New Position at Discovery

wonyalucas1.jpgPopular cable executive Wonya Lucas has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer for Discovery Channel and Science Channel, the company has announced.

Lucas takes the new post from "her position as Chief Marketing Officer for Discovery Communications where she provided brand strategy leadership and coordination acress Discovery’s global businesses," the company said in a statement.

In her new role Lucas takes over from Tom Cosgrove, who was recently named president and CEO of the new 3D TV network co-owned by Discovery, Sony and IMAX.

Clark Bunting, who runs both the Discovery and Science channels, said in a statement, "Wonya’s depth of expertise across every network function make her an invaluable addition to our leadership team. Bringing her critical eye to our business processes and her understanding of evolving brands to our networks will be key to driving us towards future growth across Discovery Channel and Science Channel.”  

Lucas will report to Bunting.

Discovery Communications said it "will begin an internal and external search to replace Ms. Lucas as CMO."

Prior to joining Discovery Communications, Lucas held key marketing posts at The Weather Channel and at Turner Broadcasting. She’s also held brand management positions at Coca-Cola and Clorox.

Earlier this year Lucas was named one the the "75 Most Powerful Women in Business" by "Black ENterprise" magazine.

  2. Wow, Gene! Thought we had a scoop there for a minute! But, alas, I checked and yes, it turned out to be a typo. So while we have no idea whether or not Mr. Cosgrove will be the “naked” president of Discovery 3D (hey, Discovery is a very innovative company! :-), we do know for a fact that he was “named” president of Discovery 3D, so we’ve made that change to the story.
