Coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup gave Univision the biggest opening-day ratings for the sports event, outpacing ESPN’s opening match coverage, B&C reports.
The Spanish-language network drew 5.4 million viewers on average in the U.S. with the tournament’s opening match, which ended with a 1-1 draw between Mexico and hosting nation South Africa on Friday, the article says. ESPN’s opening match coverage, by comparison, drew about 2.6 million viewers.
Univision’s following Group A match, which ended in a scoreless tie between France and Uruguay, was watched by 2.54 million viewers.
