Want Home Videos in 3-D? That Will Cost You $1,340 (Television Not Included)

If you’ve ever said to yourself what’s really missing is a 3-D camcorder, then you’ll be thrilled to learn that Panasonic will soon be selling what it calls the world’s first consumer 3-D camcorder, according to a report in the New York Post.

The cost? A mere $1,340, television not included.

The camcorder has a removable 3-D conversion lens that splits images in half, similar to what a person’s right and left eye see, the article says.

The effect works best on subjects about three to 10 feet away from the camera. Of course, to watch the footage you’ll need both a 3-D equipped television and glasses.

According to the story, when the 3-D lens is removed, the camcorder takes standard 2-D video as well.

  1. That’s not so bad. I paid the exact same amount in 1987 for my Hitachi VHS camcorder. That was a damn-sight more money then than now and I sure had less of it then. But save your money; 3-D is a fad, as it has been the three previous times it’s been forced on us. It will fade into obscurity until or unless someone comes up with a way to view it without those stupid glasses! IMHO, of course.

  2. Not likely to go away as long as Movie studios can use it to raise ticket prices $5-10 per ticket. This has been a strong summer for the studios even with less tickets sold thanks to 3-D. Next summer the studios are forcing most major films to be in 3-D to capitalize on the extra charge to rent glasses
