Conan O’Brien’s new late-night program on TBS is attracting rates "on parity with broadcast" pricing, according to Time Warner Chairman Jeff Bewkes on an earnings conference call Wednesday, reports Mediaweek.
The news raises the question as to whether late-night might be the next programming segment on broadcast to find itself racing against cable, the story says. "If O’Brien’s TBS show is a hit, it could serve to kick out another strut from under an already teetering broadcast edifice. Cable has dominated the kids and news space for the better part of a decade, and but for marquee events like the Super Bowl and the World Series, sports have long ago shifted over to the ad-supported cable nets," the article says.
The last remaining segment where the broadcast nets will maintain a pricing advantage could be primetime, the article points out.
Don’t bet on Prime Time lasting much longer. THis summer is again showing that Cable can get consistently better ratings than broadcast.
TBS better save some inventory for all the makegoods.
