Cablevision Extends 11th-Hour Offer to Fox as World Series Broadcast Hangs in Balance

In an apparent attempt to break the impasse between Cablevision and Fox over retransmission fees in time to bring the World Series to viewers in the New York area, Cablevision Systems Corp. made a new offer today to Fox parent News Corp., The Wall Street Journal reported.

Cablevision proposed paying News Corp. the same rate a rival cable operator pays to carry its Fox programming, the story says.

The stalemate between the two companies has produced a programming blackout, now 12 days old, that threatens to prevent 3 million households in the New York area from getting the World Series broadcast.

Details of the offer weren’t immediately available, according to the article. But Cablevision issued a news release saying that it would pay, for one year, the rate Fox charges Time Warner Cable to carry local New York and Philadelphia affiliates.

"This is higher than the rate we pay any other New York broadcast station," Cablevision said in the statement. "This solution is in the best interest of not only baseball fans but of all Cablevision customers and Fox viewers."

  1. I think that Fox is being a pig and especially that it is a “free” station but using cable for delivery in tri-state metro area. Looking for more than 200% for allowing viewers to watch programming on its station is absurd. All sports and tv shows should pull out of Fox and make deals with other networks and never return to it.
