Coke May Be Canned, As Simon Cowell Is Talking With Pepsi for ‘X Factor’ Sponsorship

Coke may get canned by Simon Cowell, reports the New York Post

The beverage giant may lose out to Pepsi in securing a sponsorship for Cowell’s new program, "The X Factor," the story says. It’s still unclear whether Pepsi may sign on, since the show is a year from debuting in the U.S. But "American Idol" will return to television in January, with its very prominent product placement of cola rival Coke.

The article notes that while discussions with Pepsi are taking place, Coca-Cola and Dr. Pepper-Snapple may be as equally interested in securing a deal for the new show. It seems unlikely, however, that Coke would sponsor both shows, given that the sponsorship cost of "American Idol" is around $10 million, the story says.

  1. If I were Coke, I’d go for it, as there’s no guarantee that Idol will last past this upcomming season.
I absolutely expect The X-Factor to air in Winter 2012, not fall 2011, as a replacement for Idol.
