Redbox Unveils Digital Strategy to Rent DVDs Online, Considering Similar Plan to Netflix

Redbox, whose kiosks are positioned outside of stores and which charge $1 per DVD rental, is planning a digital strategy and is talking with several partners for the new service to allow customers to rent DVDs online, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Company Town blog.

"The disc business is still very strong and will continue to be for quite some time, but we need to get into this space to take advantage of the gradual transition to digital," said chief executive Mitch Lowe.

The company has discussed offering a monthly subscription plan similar to what Netflix offers, and if enough rentals are allowed per month, the per-DVD cost could be $1 each, the article notes.
