Will YouTube Become a Content Channel a la ABC, NBC, or CBS? Google Hopes So

Search giant Google wants its YouTube service to become a content channel on the living room television set, able to compete with TV networks such as ABC, CBS and NBC, reports Claire Atkinson in the New York Post.

Google executives have been visiting Madison Ave. advertising agencies to demonstrate Google TV, which not only combines the Web and the TV set but allows viewers to watch YouTube videos on TV screens like one would watch traditional networks, the story says. "Still, Google’s YouTube has a ways to go before it will be seen in the same league as the TV networks," Atkinson writes.

Separately, it’s been reported that the Google TV project, however, was recently moved to its YouTube division, which some speculate was in reaction to a negative response to the Internet-TV service from the top broadcasters, which are blocking online versions of their full programs, according to SFGate.com.

Google responded to the report by saying that the shift has "no correlation between the recent blocking by three US networks of Google TV accessing their full-length Web shows and [is] a reorganization that YouTube did over a month ago," notes the SeattlePI.com’s The Tech Chronicles blog.
