Accusing Comcast of "gun jumping," Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) on Monday asked the Justice Department to look into whether the cable operator’s announcement last week of NBC Universal’s planned executive structure was an "illegal collaboration," reports the Hollywood Reporter.
Because Comcast revealed the executive plan before it’s received regulatory approval for the merger, Franken alleges that "Comcast may be seeking to indirectly exert managerial and operational control of that company." In his letter to the Justice Department, Franken said that Comcast "may purposefully or inadvertently trigger the exchange of competitively sensitive information between the companies beyond what is customarily permissible in pre-merger settings," constituting " ‘gun jumping’ in violation" of antitrust law, the story notes.
Comcast said that the planning and announcement of a new executive structure is typical and that the company hadn’t interfered with NBCU’s business affairs, the story notes.
Well when many conservatives think “Al Franken” and “gun jumping” I bet they get a whole different picture…
CAVEAT: humorous observation only; no malice implied on my part. Sad that this is necessary to spell out but these are the times we live in.
One more example why the Comcast deal should not be approved. They have a plan to control a large portion of media and use it to hurt competitors and consumers.
