Facebook to Take on Google, Yahoo and Microsoft with Email Service for Users

Facebook is introducing an email service for its users, bringing it in steeper competition with Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, reports Bloomberg News.

All users will receive an @facebook.com email address, Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said on Monday. The new service will include text messaging and instant messaging as well, the story notes. This is not an e-mail killer,” Zuckerberg said. “Maybe we can help push the way people do messaging more towards this simple, real time, immediate, personal experience.”

Facebook may be able to filter out spam messages better than other Web mail competitors by using the social-networking site’s friend data, said Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land, a Website, the article notes.

At the time of Facebook’s announcement, Google’s Gmail experienced an outage, which lasted about 10 minutes, the story adds.
