Olbermann Says He Will Tweak His Show In Response to Jon Stewart’s Rally

Nov 2, 2010  •  Post A Comment

MSNBC host Keith Olbermann said he’s taking to heart Jon Stewart’s message at his rally over the weekend against partisanship and anger in cable news. Olbermann said he will suspend his long-running "Worst Persons in the World" segment, reports The Hollywood Reporter’s The Live Feed blog.

"Its satire and whimsy have gradually gotten lost in some anger, so in the spirit of the thing, as of right now, I am unilaterally suspending that segment with an eye towards discontinuing it," Olbermann said.

The "Countdown" host, however, defended his network against Stewart’s comments that suggested MSNBC and Fox News are equally troubling in their approaches, the story says.

Said Olbermann: “Sticking up for the powerless is not the moral equivalent of sticking up for the powerful.”

  1. I’m sure all 9 in your audience reeeely appreciates your concern. EVER ONWARD!

  2. While I agree 100% with Jon Stewart’s sentiments, I’m sad that my favorite part of Keith’s show is the part that’s getting the ax.
Frankly, the Worst Persons in the World segment was one of the kindler, gentler aspects of his show, and usually filled with at least a little humor mixed in with the venom.
The part of his show that I think SHOULD be tweaked is the one-sided echo chamber for the first 30-minutes of his show. I don’t think Countdown should give equal coverage to both sides of an argument, especially when the other side is often WITHOUT a valid argument. But if Rachel Maddow can occasionally feature someone representing the rational middle ground, why can’t Keith?
BRING BACK WORST PERSONS!!! It’s the frigging highlight of my day!

  3. re: Observer —
It’s just that kind of childish comment that Jon Stewart was railing against.
That Olbermann’s audience is smaller than, say, Glenn Beck is meaningless. As has been pointed out repeatedly, Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants each have a much larger audience than both Glenn and Kelth of them combined.
Size (of audience) doesn’t matter when it comes to judging ideas or a show’s value.
