To Settle Consumer Complaints About Advertising, DirecTV Agrees to Pay $14.25 Million

In a settlement agreement with the 50 States Attorney Generals over its advertising policies, DirecTV has agreed to pay $14.25 million for court costs and an as-yet undetermined amount for consumer restitution, reports B&C.

The complaints stem from January 2007 and relate to allegations of deceptive and unfair business practices, the story says, citing an emailed release from Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray.

He said his office received 1,714 complaints over the time period, ranging from issues such as allegations that DirecTV didn’t clearly disclose prices to automatic renewals on at least one seasonal deal, the story says.

DirecTV said it’s made many of the improvements that are part of the settlement.

"But in a business where we serve more than 19 million customers and take more than 120 million phone calls a year, we recognize that we don’t get it right every single time," the company said on its Website.

  2. This is not the first time DIRECTV has been in litigation about their false and misleading advertisements. It’s no surprise that they are going to have to pay more than 14 million dollars to subscribers and it’s received an “F” from the Better Business Bureau with over 40,000 complaints from consumers. I’ve had almost all pay TV providers you can possibly imagine and the best one I feel like I have gotten the most value for is by far DISH Network and since I already work there, I also see if on the other side and I have to say, I love DISH and I highly recommend that people look into their company because being a customer and an employee has made me appreciate DISH!
