Matt Weiner the creator and show runner of ‘Mad Men" is very worried about the future of the series.
In an exclusive interview with EW.com’s Lynette Rice on the magazine’s Inside TV blog, Weiner says he’s caught between the two business powers behind the show, Cablevision’s AMC and Lionsgate:
"[T]he truth is I don’t even know what their plans are. We have not started writing. I am not back at work. My contract expired. They are fighting over a very lucrative property, and who is going to pay for it to get made; it’s one of the biggest perils of success — everyone wants a piece of it now and they are fighting over who is gonna get the biggest chunk. Then they will come to me because talent is last. It would be heartbreaking for me if they don’t work it out, horrifying really. It would be a shame for fans to never get to see what great stuff we have planned for Don and company.”
As a TV publicist and a former Hollywood newsperson at THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER these past 30 years I have rarely,if ever, seen a drama series executed with such compelling stories and characters..and of course writing too as I have in Matt Weiner’s MAD MEN. MM is made of the stuff that comprises guality, entertaining and intelligent television which we need more of. C’mon AMC and Lionsgate…settle up.
Quite honestly, I always enjoy MM, however, good shows come and go all the time. Look at all the great shows that come out of the UK, and they only exist for a few episodes. Talent moves on to the next great new show. Maybe the wonderful talent involved with MM should jump now and get busy on the next best new show.
