A five-time Emmy winner is poised to take on the role of Barney’s mysterious father on CBS’s “How I Met Your Mother,” TV Guide reports. Barney, played by Neil Patrick Harris, has never known his dad and for a time thought Bob Barker was his father.

Although the deal is not finalized, the role will reportedly go to John Lithgow, who is no stranger to comedy, having starred in NBC’s "3rd Rock from the Sun."

After this week’s show, in which Barney’s friend Marshall (Jason Segel) had to attend his father’s funeral, Barney called his mother to ask her to tell him who his real dad is so he could meet him.

Lithgow won three Emmys for his lead role in “3rd Rock,” along with a 1986 Emmy for “Amazing Stories” and his most recent, a 2010 award for a guest spot on the Showtime drama “Dexter.” He also has two Oscar nominations under his belt, for supporting roles in “The World According to Garp” and “Terms of Endearment.”

Lithgow’s episode is expected to air this spring.
