Much of the talk after Sunday’s Golden Globes telecast was not about the awards themselves but about the performance of host Ricky Gervais. He has drawn sharp criticism for his stinging jokes, which some are describing as vicious and inappropriate attacks on the entertainment industry’s most vulnerable targets.

TVWeek Open Mic blogger Hillary Atkin takes an insightful look at just what the fuss is about, and pinpoints where Gervais may have in fact gone wrong. Read her take on the Golden Globes here.

  1. Gervais did his usual schtick. There shouldn’t be any complaints from thsoe that hired him.

  2. His hosting performance was no different from last year’s, and is exactly what you should expect from him.
Those who suffered his barbs are those who think he’s funny as long as he’s attacking someone else.
I heard a lot of people laughing at his jokes regarding The Tourist as an example, except from Angie, and likewise from the crowd at Robert Downey, Jr.’s intro.
Not to mention the obligatory Mel Gibson jokes.
So what’s with the newfound sensitivity? Could Tom Hanks not take the barbs? Could Tom Cruise not, indirectly?
If Hollywood is upset this morning, they’re a bunch of oversensitive crybabies who should know not to hire Gervais.
It’s like hiring Don Rickles and expecting him not to insult anyone.

  3. I agree with both guys. Digital was right that the people that hired him shouldnt be complaining.
As for Gervais, he was fantastic. Hollywood needs to grow up. TMZ gives them all crap every single day. If the crybabies are going to keep crying then I guess they should stop doing the drugs, alcohol, beatings, cheating and homosexuality.

  4. Several years ago Robin Williams hosted the Oscars. Ripped eveyone a new one, the program was a scream and he was not invited back either.
They want good, just not great. Much like the ratings. Mediocrity rules!

  5. Ricky Gervais was terrific. I laughed my ass off, some of the funniest jokes I’ve heard in a long time. Were they a bit mean? Sure. But they were FUNNY! I especially liked his joke about the payola scandal and the HFPA.

  6. I could swear I heard them say this was the most watched Globe Awards in 5 years. Who do they think brought them to the screen the same ole actors for the same ole shows.
