A former "American Idol" contestant who finished as runner-up on the singing competition show has been tapped for a co-starring role in the NBC pilot "Smash," reports Deadline.com.

Katharine McPhee, who appeared on the fifth season of “Idol,” will play a struggling actress who will go to any length to get the part of Marilyn Monroe in the Broadway musical that’s being put together by the show’s characters.

As earlier reported, Debra Messing, the Emmy-winning star of "Will & Grace," will join the pilot as the show’s good-natured lyricist.

The project is from DreamWorks TV and UMS and is based on an idea by Steven Spielberg, the story notes.
