The son of one of the the most popular TV sitcom actors of all time is interested in taking on the role his dad made famous when the show is remade as a feature film and broadway play, TV Guide reports.

The actor is Jason Ritter, the son of the late TV legend John Ritter, and the show is the long-running ‘70s and ‘80s comedy “Three’s Company,” in which John Ritter played Jack Tripper opposite a series of actresses including Suzanne Somers, Joyce DeWitt and Jenilee Harrison.

Jason Ritter, however, is far from a lock for the part. The proposed reboot is the brainchild of actor and director James Franco, who envisions himself in the Jack Tripper role. Franco, currently nominated for an Oscar for best actor in a lead role for “127 Hours,” reportedly is approaching the new “Three’s Company” as a drama.

Asked about his interest in playing Tripper, Jason Ritter told the publication the idea is “as surreal as it could possibly get. Apparently, James’ thing is ‘Three’s Company’ read seriously, and that would be an amazing challenge–in a lot of ways. Emotionally and spiritually and all that. But hey, I would never say ‘no’ to anything. I’m open to the idea.”
