Comedian Gilbert Gottfried, who was fired Monday as the voice of the Aflac duck, apologized today for Twitter jokes about the disastrous earthquake and tsunami in Japan, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"I sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by my attempt at humor regarding the tragedy in Japan,” Gottfried said in a statement. “I meant no disrespect, and my thoughts are with the victims and their families."

The insurance company fired Gottfried, who has been the voice of the Aflac duck since 2000, issuing a statement that the jokes he posted on his Twitter account were “lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac.”

The company, which does a large portion of its business in Japan, is reportedly now searching for a new voice for the duck.
