Mel Gibson Agrees to Plead Guilty to Battery

Mel Gibson has reportedly reached an agreement with prosecutors in the domestic violence case against him and will appear in court Friday to plead guilty, TMZ.com reports. The agreement will enable Gibson to avoid jail time, according to the story.

Gibson is expected to plead to simple battery, a less severe charge than the charge of corporal injury on a spouse that has come up in the case. The charge stems from a fracas that took place Jan. 6, 2010, between Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva.

Gibson may be required to receive counseling as part of the agreement. His lawyer said Gibson asked him to seek the plea deal to spare Gibson’s family the ordeal of a trial and the “enormous media circus” that would go along with it.
