The family of Michael Jackson was offended by a comment on Wednesday’s episode of Fox’s “American Idol” that referenced a 1984 incident involving Jackson, TMZ.com reports.
Contestant James Durbin reportedly said on the show, "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around–so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a ‘Pepsi moment.’" The reference was apparently to the incident in which Jackson’s hair caught fire while he was filming a Pepsi commercial.
Said a rep for Jackson’s family: "We were shocked to see this. It’s nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael’s death."
It has been suggested that Jackson’s injury in the 1984 accident contributed to his subsequent drug abuse. Members of Jackson’s family were reportedly upset that the producers of “Idol” failed to remove the remark from the taped West Coast feed.
Oh please. That happend 27 years ago. Grow up and get a sense of humor…
Seriously? I do hope the Jackson family doesn’t have a Charlie Sheen moment over this.
I guess this is as good an illustration as any of the fact that Jackson family was never very good at managing real-world priorities.
Popping off about this benign, offhand remark by an American Idol contestant in the aftermath of a high-energy performance is silly and incredibly myopic.
And why should the issue of responsibility for Michael’s death come into this?
It’s also telling that the family chooses to hide behind a spokesman rather than stepping forward and saying what they want to say in their own words. So, I guess you can add cowardly to the family dossier.
What everybody should be focusing on is that the same family of vultures that wrecked Michael Jackson’s childhood and life is now trying to milk still more publicity and money from his tragic death.
