Oscar winner Warren Beatty has prevailed over Tribune Media in a legal dispute involving the rights to the classic comics character Dick Tracy, reports Reuters.

U.S. District Court Judge Dean D. Pregerson ruled in Beatty’s favor last Thursday, asserting that Beatty’s rights to the character were intact. The Tribune group had claimed that those rights had lapsed.

Beatty proved that in 2008 he had been developing a "Dick Tracy" television special, which meant had earned continued rights for the character.

The dispute stems from an agreement originally signed in 1985 in which Tribune assigned rights to the character to Beatty.
