3D TV Shipments Projected to Grow Fivefold in 2011

A research firm is projecting that shipments of 3D TVs in the U.S. and Canada will rise dramatically this year, Multichannel News reports. With greater availability of content and lower set prices cited as the two biggest factors, the firm IHS iSuppli estimates that 8.2 million units will ship, more than five times the 1.49 million estimated for 2010.

That figure is expected to rise again in 2012, but only doubling that year–to 16.99 million sets, the story says.

The piece notes: “TV manufacturers experienced a ‘lukewarm response to 3D in 2010 when consumers balked at the high price of sets and the lack of 3D content,’ IHS iSuppli analyst Riddhi Patel said. They have changed marketing tactics to promote 3D ‘not as a must-have technology but as a desirable feature, similar to the approach they have taken with Internet connectivity.’"
