An actress whose career spanned much of the history of television and who appeared in almost 80 series has died at 81, reports The New York Times.

Barbara Stuart died Sunday in St. George, Utah.

Stuart debuted on television with "I Led 3 Lives" in 1954 and made her last TV appearance on the Showtime series "Huff" in 2006. While she never became a true TV star, viewers might recall her as a long-suffering girlfriend on "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." or as McLean Stevenson’s wife on "The McLean Stevenson Show.”

Her credits include some shows that remain TV favorites, such as "Rawhide," "Taxi" and "The Twilight Zone," as well as other series that have faded with time, such as "Jefferson Drum" and "Markham.” Typically Stuart appeared on just one or two episodes in a TV series, although she did have a recurring role on "Pete and Gladys" in the early 1960s and on "Our Family Honor" in the mid-1980s.

Her last TV role was a recurring part on "Huff," on which she played Blythe Danner’s bridge partner Alice from 2004 to 2006.
