Epix today revealed plans for “Shatnerpalooza,” a multiplatform programming event focused on the TV and film work of former “Star Trek” captain William Shatner.

The showpiece of the event will be the unveiling of “The Captains,” an original Epix documentary on the “Star Trek” franchise, produced and directed by Shatner. The production goes behind the scenes of the long-running TV franchise through the eyes of the actors who have played Starfleet captains on the show’s various incarnations, including Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula, Avery Brooks, Chris Pine and Shatner himself.

“Shatnerpalooza” will include a 48-hour marathon of Shatner-focused programming, launching July 21 on all Epix platforms, including the Epix channel, the SVOD service, EpixHD.com and Internet-connected devices.

The channel’s July celebration of Shatner will also include “William Shatner’s Gonzo Ballet,” a revealing documentary on choreographer Margo Sappington’s staging of a ballet set to the soundtrack of Shatner’s spoken word album. The project features contributions from Ben Folds, Henry Rollins and others.

“From film and TV icon to hipster hero, William Shatner is a man of many talents,” Epix President and CEO Mark Greenberg said in a press statement. “We are proud to celebrate him as actor, producer, director and cultural phenomenon and to bring his contributions to fans.”
