Al Jazeera English has found a home on the air in Los Angeles, even as it searches for cable distribution in the U.S., reports Elizabeth Jensen in The New York Times’ Media Decoder blog.

KCET-TV, which dropped its PBS affiliation in January, has benefited from carrying the report, with its ratings during Al Jazeera’s main 4 p.m. time slot more than doubling from February through May, the story notes.

The two segments aired from Al Jazeera are outpacing Japan’s NHK and the Israel Broadcasting Authority broadcasts on the station, but are still drawing fewer viewers than the BBC World News, the piece notes.

The Al Jazeera newscasts are drawing more than 285,000 viewers per week, the article adds.
