Netflix Loses Sony Movies in Contract Dispute

Jun 20, 2011  •  Post A Comment

Netflix alerted subscribers that Sony movies have been removed from the streaming site because of what it describes as a "temporary contract issue between Sony and Starz," according to Netflix’s blog.

The blog said the partners are working "though their differences," although the Associated Press reports that Netflix’s burgeoning subscriber base had triggered a clause in Sony’s agreement with Starz that resulted in the halt.

The temporary halt to streaming Sony films, which are still available through DVDs in the mail, comes as Starz is trying to show Netflix how many customers tap into streaming movies from its studio partners, Sony and Walt Disney Co., the AP piece notes.

Starz’ current deal with Netflix is up next year and Netflix is expected to pay much more than its current $30 million per year, the article adds.
