One of the top executives in the TV industry–who formerly has held major positions at both NBC and AOL–has been named president and CEO of Univision, the company announced.

Randy Falco, who had been named Univision’s executive vice president and chief operating officer earlier this year, succeeds Joe Uva as CEO. In March, Univision announced that Uva would be leaving on April 2nd.

In a surprising announcement, Falco told the Los Angeles Times that the Spanish language network is considering doing some of its broadcasting in English. " ‘We are absolutely looking at that,’ Falco said. ‘But we are going to experiment with what our audience will allow. Over time we will assess what appetite our audience has for English on Univision.’ "

According to the Univision release, "Haim Saban, executive chairman of the Univision Board of Directors, stated, ‘The Board unanimously agreed that Randy’s track record and expertise make him the ideal executive to lead Univision’s future growth. Randy has over 30 years of relevant industry experience and has demonstrated his highly-skilled leadership and strategic vision at Univision over the past six months. We are confident in Randy’s ability to deliver on Univision’s goals and accelerate our growth as a leading multi-platform media company in America.’ "

Falco said, according to the written announcement, "I am thrilled to take on the role of Chief Executive Officer. Univision has been at the forefront of innovation and has grown its competitive position while continuing to serve and advocate for the important U.S. Hispanic community. I’m excited to lead a company with such tremendous growth potential and look forward to continuing to work with such an exceptional leadership team.”

The  L.A. Times article, by Meg James, also notes, "The 2010 census showed that Latinos are the fastest-growing segment of the population with more than 50 million living in the U.S., making up 16% of the population. Last month, Univision unveiled plans to launch three new cable networks to fortify its dominance in the Spanish-language media."

  1. It would be great for them to at least have closed captioning in English available. I would greatly increase their market by allowing people who only speak English to watch their channel.
