The success of Fox’s "Glee" hasn’t translated to Oxygen’s reality show "The Glee Project," which tracks "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy as he looks for a new cast member for the Fox hit, reports Joe Adalian in New York Magazine’s Vulture blog.
Just 455,000 people watched the show’s Sunday debut, and in the key demographic of viewers 18 to 49 years old, the total was a mere 211,000, the story says.
"These numbers are pretty shocking, given how much marketing muscle Oxygen put behind the launch," Adalian writes, noting that talk has been circulating about a "Glee" backlash.
While the Fox hit has its detractors, the Oxygen show may have been hampered by its scheduling opposite the Tony Awards, which many "Glee" fans probably watched, as well as the high-rated Game 6 of the NBA Finals, the story notes.
Another issue may be that "Glee" has lost some traction in the ratings and in buzz since the reality spinoff was first ordered by Oxygen last summer.
