NBC Inks Record Deal for Upcoming Drama Series–And One of the Show’s Stars, an ‘American Idol’ Alum, Signs Her Own Deal

NBCUniversal announced that the upcoming NBC drama series "Smash," set in the world of Broadway musicals, has signed a deal with Columbia Records for the show’s soundtrack. In addition, former "American Idol" contestant Katharine McPhee, who will play the up-and-coming musical star of the show within the show on "Smash," has inked a solo deal with Columbia Records.

In a statement, Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, said: “A musical series should naturally be accompanied by a soundtrack deal, and NBC is very excited to be working with the best. Our Columbia Records partners will guide the soundtrack of ‘Smash’ into a big component of the show’s success. The music will be a driving force of what promises to make a tremendous impact for NBC in January and we couldn’t have asked for better expertise and strategy than this company will provide.”

There’s plenty of precedent for this kind of synergy between music and television, including most recently the success of "Glee" and Sony Music.

"Smash" tells the story of the creation of a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Debra Messing, of "Will & Grace" fame, stars as one of the songwriters.

  1. Aaahhh … nothing like reading about yet another NBCU big top flop!

  2. This sounds perfect for Kat! She met with Steven Spielberg right after Idol & he was so impressed. It took 5 years for them to team up, but now, this is a perfect role for her! So excited!
Smash has been one the most talked about pilots for this season! Flop . . I don’t think so, but we will see.
