Ratcheting Up Rivalry With PBS, Nickelodeon Gets in the Homework Game

In a move that ratchets up its rivalry with PBS, Nickelodeon is getting into the homework game with the July introduction of a set of math homework kits, reports Elizabeth Jensen in The New York Times’ Media Decoder blog.

The three kits are marketed as Team Umizoomi Preschool Math Kits, pegged to a Nick Jr. math-focused show of the same title. Other educational products are currently sold using Nickelodeon’s brands, but those are sold by third-party companies via licensing agreements.

The three new kits will cost $20 each and focus on math skills such as measuring and classification. They include an episode on DVD, a workbook, storybook, activity book and cards with curriculum-based games, as well as pencils and an eraser.

PBS last month announced its first line of preschool toys branded with the PBS Kids name and an online shop with books and games that are tied to PBS shows.
