"Jon Stewart, making what was billed as ‘his first appearance ever on a Sunday talk show,’ told Chris Wallace, host of Fox News Sunday [on Sunday, June 19, 2011], he was ‘insane’ if Wallace thinks his comedy has ‘an ideological, partisan agenda," reports EW.com TV citiic Ken Tucker, adding, "His ‘Daily Show’ satire, Stewart said, ‘is about absurdity and corruption.’ "

Furthermore, according to the review, "[T]the comedian batted away Wallace’s accusations that The New York Times and ‘the mainstream media’ have a liberal agenda. ‘Their bias is toward sensationalism and conflict and laziness,’ said Stewart…Stewart said that Wallace maintains this belief about liberal agendas because ‘that is the soup you swim in” as a Fox employee. When Wallace protested that he is not given a Fox News mandate about what beliefs to hold or positions to push, Stewart agreed with him: ‘You are a tough interviewer. [But] you are here as a counterweight to [Sean] Hannity… or Glenn Beck.’ ”

We offer two versions of the Stewart/Wallace interview below. First, is the the complete 24-minute version that Fox News released. Under that you’ll find the 14 minute version that actually aired on Fox News.

  1. Both are right, and both are wrong.
The ABC immigration report they refers to is not “laziness” as Stewart believes but is a carefully written description of how a liberal feels about that issue. ABC & Diane Sawyer knew exactly what and how they were telling that story.
Now, I do believe that Stewart is Comedy first, but he, and others like him, always bash the right more often. Way more often.
I personally do not watch the news broadcast and political show. I was burnt out by the genre in the 90’s. But, if I want a more fair description of a political situation, I would go to FOX first.
Neither the left or the right have an “Organized” agenda, in the media. But there are more “left-leaning” people in the media than those that prefer the “right-side” of political issues.
NBC-U produced piece that has children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is a perfect example of a liberal bias and influence in the media.

  2. Mr. Stewart does push a little too hard on NOT being liberal biased. His show is that, but it is also far easier to laugh at the right. While true that lots of folks “get their news” from the Comedy Channel’s Daily Show, it is much sadder that many in this country view FOX as Fair and Balanced.

  3. Going to Fox for a “more fair” news angle is like eating a can of dog food because your soup is a little under-salted. It makes no sense to protest a perceived bias by turning to something demonstrably more biased. If you’re a conservative and you just need to bathe in conservative spin all the time, fine. But don’t have any illusions that it even tries to be even remotely objective.

  4. I work in television. When I get into a conversation about liberal bias in the media I ask the person to think about it. The type of person who believes by writing an article or producing a video, they can change the world tends to be liberal. Conservatives tend to be more attracted building something tangible. Thus liberals tend to go into the media & conservatives tend to go into business. So it’s not so much a liberal bias, but the type of person attracted to the business that causes it. Yes this is a generalization with many exceptions, but overall it is true. I know, since I’ve worked in TV for 25 years.
