Will Couric’s Talk Show Spell Doom for One of Daytime TV’s Institutions?

Jun 7, 2011  •  Post A Comment

With plans for Katie Couric’s new ABC Daytime talk show becoming official this week, programmers are examining how to shuffle things around in the afternoon to make room for Couric. Something will have to give, and one obvious target is the soap opera "General Hospital," reports the New York Post.

A key issue for the soap opera, which has been on television since 1963, is that ABC is scheduling Couric’s new afternoon show at 3 p.m., the time slot now held by "General Hospital."

ABC said in a press release that it "continues to support ‘General Hospital,’" but it didn’t explain what it meant by that.

With ABC planning to air two new daytime programs, "The Chew" and "The Revolution," it’s possible that "General Hospital" could replace either of those programs if they fail to attract viewers when they air this fall and in January, respectively, the story points out.

Couric’s show is set to debut in the fall of 2012.

  1. ABC should just admit now that “General Hospital” is going to be cancelled by 2012. They’ll save a lot of face that way.
No one believes they’ll spare their last remaining soap after unceremoniously cutting “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” from their lineup.

  2. Does Katie’s PR department work for the buzz ?
All of this news about the has been known as Couric.
Who gives a rats behind about her anymore. Nobody cared to watch her on the CBS news which lost viwers under her. I doubt much more will watch her next tired move. She will get canned in two years.

  3. Maybe they plan on putting GH on Soap Net. Don’t see it running ABC Family… or any of the ESPN channels (even though ESPN does cover a lot of soap opera sports stories)

  4. ABC is shutting SoapNet down early next year to make room for a new Disney Junior network. It seems there is no hope for soaps on the alphabet network.

  5. I would watch couric if u held a gun to my head. Her career ended when she left today show.
