Bidding has begun for the TV rights for the next four Olympics–starting with the Winter Games in Russion in 2014, reports our longtime friend Richard Sandomir in The New York Times.
Fox Sports began the auction by offering to buy the rights for the next four games. It could have chosen to bid for only two games, but the network thought it would be more cost efffective to bid for all four.
The story adds, "ESPN and NBC Sports will make their offers [today, Tuesday, June 7, 2011] to the International Olympic Committee. … A winner is expected to be declared sometime after [the] presentations."
ESPN and Fox have noted they will carry all events live on TV and online, although NBC has not said how flexible it might be about using delays on top sports, the article adds.
