With ‘Weeds’ Future Uncertain, Producer Says Finale of Seventh Season ‘Can Stand on Its Own as a Series Finale if It Has to’

"Weeds" executive producer Roberto Benabib said the finale of the seventh season "can stand on its own as a series finale if it has to or be a prelude to an eighth season," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

That flexibility reflects the uncertainty facing the show, as there’s currently no order for an eighth season for the Showtime program, the story notes.

Creator and showrunner Jenji Kohan has noted that her contract is up, the story adds. If the series is renewed, there’s a chance that Kohan won’t renew her contract, the piece adds.

Asked about that possibility, Benabib said, “I think Jenji’s voice is very important to this show. Quite frankly, I don’t think I want to watch a ‘Weeds’ without Jenji Kohan involved.”
