Cher has taken to Twitter to defend her son Chaz Bono — who was born a daughter but recently underwent gender transition — after the announcement that he would be a contestant on "Dancing with the Stars" triggered a wave of criticism, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Ministry of Gossip blog.

"Lovelies! Chaz is Being Viciously Attacked on Blogs & Message boards about being on DWTS! This is Still America right ? It took guts 2 do it," the singer tweeted.

She added: "I support him no matter what he chooses 2do! God! will there always be haters! It took COURAGE 2 do dwts!…Chaz has an Unlimited [supply]."

Bono, who is the first transgender contestant on "DWTS," said on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show Wednesday that his mom was supporting him. "She really thought it was great that I was doing it and wanted to know how I was feeling about it, if I was nervous and how it was going," Bono said, according to the story.

  1. Chaz is a woman, who has had medical treatments and surgery to make her physically resemble a man. She is genetically a woman and no medical science can change that (not yet, anyway)

  2. Your point?

  3. Just that I think it’s nuts when people make a big deal over stuff like this and act like they really believe that a woman has become a man through “gender re-assignment”. Like last year when Oprah and everyone went crazy about a pregnant man, when it was really just a woman that hadn’t even had the “re-assignment” surgery yet.
