Early Returns on ‘Two and a Half Men’: Hot, Hot, Hot (And Another Hotly Anticipated Show: Not, Not, Not)

CBS’s eagerly awaited season premiere of the retooled “Two and a Half Men,” with Ashton Kutcher taking the place of longtime star Charlie Sheen, appears to have hit it out of the park in the ratings.

The numbers are preliminary, but TVbytheNumbers.com reports that the show scored an 18.7 household rating and 26 share in metered market overnights. That compares with a 9.5/14 for last year’s season premiere — in other words, nearly double what the show had a year ago.

Demo ratings and figures for total viewers will be available later today.

But if “Two and a Half Men” was hot, hot, hot, NBC’s “The Playboy Club” was not, not, not. The show, which attracted its share of hype and controversy in the run-up to the season, premiered with half-hours of 4.1/6 and 3.7/6, not as good as last year’s numbers for the comparatively quiet “Chase”: 4.7/7 and 4.5/7.

“Men’s” lead-out, a special broadcast of CBS’s new comedy “2 Broke Girls,” had a pretty solid 12.7/18 in metered market overnights.

ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” appeared to be down a little from its fall debut a year ago, the story reports, with the two-hour program racking up half-hours of 13.3/20, 13.9/20, 13.2/19 and 14.1/20 in the metered market overnights. Last year’s comparable numbers were 14.3/21, 15.3/22, 15.4/22, and 15.5/22.

CBS’s “Hawaii Five-0” fell off from its series opener a year ago. Last night’s half-hours pulled in household numbers of 8.3/13 and 7.7/13, against last year’s 10.0/15 and 9.3/15.

  1. Of course 2 and a Half Men was going to have high ratings. Can they keep them? The big winner here was 2 Broke Girls. THat show benifited from the 2 and a Half Men effect.

  2. We all do realize that this was just one episode, right? The show benefited greatly from the “curiosity factor”. Now we’ll find out if it can maintain those #’s and that producers did make the right move.
