"Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner was asked whether he believes the new broadcast dramas "Pan Am" and "The Playboy Club" — both set in the 1960s — are ripping off his AMC show, reports New York Magazine’s Joe Adalian.

"Define ripping something off. I don’t own the period. I see the whole experience as a vindication," Weiner said during Entertainment Weekly’s annual pre-Emmys party, the story says. "It’s a thrill that these same people now are seeing something commercial in it. I wish them the best."

Weiner also defended his show from accusations by Kurt Sutter, creator of “Sons of Anarchy,” that the reason AMC’s "Breaking Bad" and "The Walking Dead" had budget issues was due to the network’s deal for "Mad Men."

"It’s just not true. [My] show is a billion-dollar business, that’s number one. Number two, they’re in a business doing what they’re doing," Weiner said. "And my deal had nothing to do with it. They were trying to cut the budget on ‘The Walking Dead’ before they were even negotiating with me."
